DHF supports after-school enrichment programs for ISDs. There are several benefits to an ISD offering a free dinner and an after-school enrichment program. This can also help alleviate food insecurity for students who may not have access to regular meals at home.
Second, an after-school enrichment program can provide students with a safe and structured environment after school hours. These programs can enhance their social, emotional and cognitive development while promoting teamwork and fostering creativity. DHF’s programs can be offered after activities for up to 2 hours after the end of the school day.
Additionally, offering these programs within the ISD can help bridge socioeconomic gaps among students. It ensures that all students, regardless of their economic background, have equal access to these beneficial programs. This can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable educational experience.
Moreover, providing free dinner and after-school enrichment programs can also support working parents or guardians who may have difficulty arranging childcare or providing meals during the evening hours. There is no cost for this program to the ISD. DHF works through the Texas Department of Agriculture to administer this program.
